Boston’s Kentucky Derby scandal

by
horse racing

Fifty years ago, one Bostonian was involved in a scandal that rocked the Kentucky Derby. Peter Fuller, a local boxer turned horse owner, made history as the only winner to be stripped of the first place title when it was discovered that his horse, Dancer’s Image, had illegal drugs in his system.

Fuller and his family claimed that they had nothing to do with it and believed it was likely a result of their support for Martin Luther King, Jr. and civil rights – especially because Fuller donated the $60,000 purse from the Derby to the widowed Coretta Scott King.
