The complex life of a rock

by Michael Polzella
stones

Working with materials that are millions of years old, I sometimes can feel like an intruder. But on a recent buying trip, my tour guides had me examine fossils, and I felt just the opposite. Perfectly preserved, unaltered, immortal beauty – I felt embraced by the open arms of these prehistoric gems.

This Valentine’s Day, stones of love, passion, hope and desire will be exchanged – beautiful rings hugging our fingers, bracelets wrapping our wrists and intriguing art adorning our homes. My fascination with stones satisfies my need for historical evidence that even during something ferocious, we can survive and emerge radiant.
