Gargantuan roommates Ruth and Emily received five new toys earlier this month from Massachusetts College of Art and Design students as part of an annual program offered at the school. The gifts presented to the Asian elephants living at Buttonwood Park Zoo are as enriching as they are fun.
The students’ objective was to design and create objects that offer choices and variables. They worked with biologists and animal trainers to study animal behavior and made the toys using old fire hoses, tires, steel pipes, chimes and more.
The hope is to inspire similar programs at zoos across the country.
