“The Obama Portraits Tour” visits its seventh and final stop at the MFA Boston to celebrate both history and legacy through exceptional art. The portraits portray the former President and First Lady in a refreshing new light, departing from the traditional styles used for previous presidents.
Artists Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald are the first African American artists commissioned to create official portraits of a President and First Lady. While Wiley’s portrait of Barack Obama and Sherald’s of Michelle Obama differ, both are approachable, helping viewers connect with the contemporary styles.
Unveiled in 2018, the portraits evoke strong public responses.
