Entering college can be stressful for students and their families. The College Board estimates that individual students spend up to $1,200 on books and materials every year – be sure to do your research and cut costs where you can.
I would suggest waiting to purchase books. Most schools have an add/drop period during the first two weeks of the semester, and while some students end up changing their classes, others find out that the $300 textbook they just purchased wasn’t required.
If you do need it, consider renting the book online from Amazon or Chegg to save money.
