Setting art free

stone carving

You can’t be a stone designer and not know Michelangelo’s quote: “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.” This happened when master stone carvers Gerd and Patrick Dreher carved a piece of tourmaline into a gorgeous stone toad in Germany.

Just as a frog emerges from a dark hibernation releasing a high-pitched song, stone artists like Gerd and Patrick refine raw, jagged stones into beauty to reveal the magnificence that was once ignored. This is one of my favorite things about design, when history, meaning and nature collide to steal my heart.
