Make Way for Ducklings sculpture celebrates 35 years

by The 100 Companies

When the Mallards’ octet of aquatic offspring hatched onto the pages of literary history in 1941, they created a splash that’s endured for eight decades.

This October, the bronzed brood of Robert McCloskey’s Make Way For Ducklings – winner of the 1942 Caldecott Medal and Massachusetts’ official children’s book – celebrate 35 years in the Boston Public Garden.

Designed by Nancy Schön, the sculpture – of Mrs. Mallard leading Jack, Kack, Lack, Mack, Nack, Ouack, Pack and Quack to safety – is a tribute to the author who made Boston, and the city’s place of pastoral refuge, “familiar to children throughout the world.”
