The oldest school in the U.S.

by
Boston Latin School

Boston Latin School has lots to boast about. Not only is it the oldest school in the U.S., but five signers of the Declaration of Independence attended the school.

Founded in 1635, the school was modeled after the European Latin school model, which emphasized learning religion, Latin and classical literature – explaining the “Latin” in Boston Latin School. English was not dominant at the time, so learning a second language was considered critical.

Current students proudly claim Harvard was created for their school’s first graduates to continue their education. Today, about 25 Boston Latin students go to Harvard each year.
