Jogging your memory: Boston Marathon milestones

by
Boston Marathon

With Patriots’ Day around the corner, the city is preparing to celebrate the 122nd anniversary of the world’s oldest annual marathon, the Boston Marathon. Here are some of the milestones that the race has seen over the years to jog your memory as to why we love it so much:

1897: The very first running of the Boston Marathon.

1924: The distance for marathons is standardized at 26.2 miles.

1969: The race is officially moved to the third Monday in April.

1966: Roberta Gibb is the first woman to run the marathon.

1975: The wheelchair division is developed.
